SURPRISE!

Documentary photography is something I already do for my own family, and have done for years. Since I started toting a camera around at the age of 11, actually. I just take pictures of our normal, boring life and look for ways to make each shot more interesting or beautiful. I look for ways to show more emotion- more enjoyment, more laughter, more love. I try and figure out how to take a totally unstaged, unprompted moment and make it glow with fullness and light.

I love about documentary sessions because we don't create these crazy adventurous moments to photograph, we don’t find the most gorgeous place or stand just right or put on some sort of show. I want to photograph the normal in your day. The little moments that you love and that make your family so special to you. It’s that quick big-kid hug between fussy toddler wrangling, the sudden laughter after a tense moment, the cereal slinging, homework doing, kiss-giving, and couch cuddling that makes these sessions true and honest and beautiful. It’s what makes them stand the test of time, and gives you something to look back on decades in the future that will bring your right back to that moment, that feeling, that embrace.

If you can’t tell, I’m convinced these sessions are not only beautiful, but also important.
